ABSTRACT Energy is the fundamental basis for the development and sustainable growth of any society. Thus we need a model which balances all the factors that define an energy system: "reliable and guaranteed supply", "sustainability" (clean, reduced emissions), "competitiveness" (reasonable price) and "self-sufficiency". This work analyses in detail the Spanish energy system by checking the current status of the four factors above to enable a basis to be set for proposals to improve the system, and will inexorably lead to a change of model in energy use which will favour using the energy we are able to produce (electricity, renewable energies, etc.) as opposed to fossil fuels, which we need to import. Therefore, based on all three main energy use sectors; industry, transport and various uses (residential, commercial, etc.); specific measures are proposed for each one, which will also entail another series of reforms in the electric system that should be carried out so that it is capable of not only meeting new demand, but of also optimising its operation as it is currently oversized and economically unsustainable. These reforms will also allow the already installed power to increase with renewable sources, especially wind and photovoltaic sources, which are currently profitable to compete in the market without requiring subsidies. With the proposed reforms, and by taking data from 1990-2014 as the basis for the study, both energy system simulations (optimistic and pessimistic) will be made until the year 2030, with and without reforms, to demonstrate the huge benefits they will contribute to the system and, therefore, the importance of correctly planning the energy system.
