ABSTRACT The Low San Francisco Sergipano Valley ("LSFSV") is one of the sub-regions within North-East Brazil ("NEB"), and it has long been held as a natural example of interaction between river and floodplain systems. This sub-region actually underwent major environmental changes in the 1970s with a modification of the San Francisco ("SF") river course triggered by the construction of the Sobradinho dam and reservoir. Between 1978 and 2015 in the irrigated perimeters in the LSFSV there have been verified an outbreaks of Rodent Plagues observed throughout an irregular temporal scale but in the same spatial scale, where rats have attacked the irrigated rice fields. This study analyses the relationship between the environmental changes in the region, damages in the rice cultivation and the new production model and climatic conditions in relation to the NEB: "El Niño" and periodic regional droughts. Results indicate that the rodent plague occurs in the same temporal scale to "El Niño" events and drought in the NEB, but its prevalence and damage in the rice fields is linked with environmental impact contitions in the region.
