Organic farming is gaining importance in recent years as a more environmentally friendly method of agricultural production. It has been observed that the number of producers and the area devoted to these crops in the world grow steadily. The present thesis analyzes the influence of a set of sociodemographic and socioeconomic variables when making the decision to follow an ecological method in the farm. The objective of the research is to analyze if these variables can characterize the profile of the producer and the ecological exploitation, in particular in the case of the Valencian Community, and, if they are sufficient to differentiate the producers who choose the ecological system production against the conventional. To achieve this objective, a descriptive analysis of the characteristics of organic farms at the national, regional and provincial level is carried out. The effect of the variables is then explored through a multiple correspondence analysis. Variables for the analysis are gender, ownership, age, training, farm size, profitability, crop type, and total work-year units. After characterizing the profile of the producer and ecological farms at the national, regional and provincial level, some specificities are deduced for the Valencian case. The analysis showed that the selected variables are not sufficient to determine the choice of an ecological or conventional method. In addition, the profile of the organic producer has hardly evolved over time, showing a slight different effect of the study variables in the two stages analyzed: 1999 and 2009. This is not a production method exclusive for a minority but rather an expanding form of production. However, there is no defined profile of organic producer that can particularize this form of agricultural production.
