Roads are vital for poverty alleviation and development. They are the arteries that connect goods to markets, workers to jobs, and children to schools. However, roads can have unintended consequences and are often the precursors to deforestation. Opening up access to a region not only allows wealth and commerce to flow in but also enables resources to be extracted and flow out. With new roads, loggers, whether legally sanctioned or not, can more easily access forests for timber; opportunities emerge to claim forested land in search of wealth; and new inhabitants are able to fell trees for firewood.
