Economic growth remains the most important driver of human development. However, it has
become increasingly clear that economic growth in and of itself is not a sufficient condition per
se to change human wellbeing. Thus, recent research has not only focused on the determinants
of economic growth, but increasingly also on its distributional nature, which is of utmost importance to effectively reduce poverty and inequality. The four essays of this thesis contribute
to the ongoing academic debate concerning income, poverty and inequality dynamics, or the
drivers and pro-poorness of economic growth, by empirically investigating four panel data sets
on selected issues at the macro and micro level.
