Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a biocompatible, water-soluble and non-ionic polymer. Because of its hydrophilic and non-toxic nature, PEG has been widely used in biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food processing applications. PEG has also been reported to show unique steric repulsion/exclusion property in aqueous environment due to its high flexibility and mobility with water. This property makes PEG to be uniquely suitable for reducing protein adsorption, cell uptake, cell stimulation and cell adhesion in body environment. PEG and its related polymers have been commonly used as hydrogels for drug delivery, cell delivery and tissue engineering. PEG is an FDA-approved biomedical polymeric material.
