Kierkegaard has become a classic author not only in his native Denmark, where he remains a major literary stylist, but also in much of the world, especially the western European and English- speaking worlds. But, like so many such authors, after the passage of time he runs the danger of being more cited than understood, of being more referred to than read. The reasons are complex but several are understandable. He is not, after all, our contemporary and he wrote in the increasingly distant literary and philosophical style of another century.
