Firstly, there is the climate challenge, which is encapsulated by the Paris Agreement of 2015 (a global agreement on the reduction of climate change negotiated at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference— COP21), in which it was agreed to limit global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees above the pre-industrial era. For the first time in history, governments, NGOs, and businesses collaboratively agreed to address the climate challenge. This has led to national and international actions following from a shared understanding of the urgency of the problem. Both the severity of the consequences and the limited time available to address climate change dictate the agenda. To achieve the set goal to limit a global temperature rise, a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions of 45-50% is needed by 2030.
