The apparent simplicity of the etymology of "autofction"—designating texts that have something to do with the self and with fction—is belied by the proliferation of meanings and practices with which it is associated. Critical writing on autofction will usually mention one or more of the following characteristics, all of which can characterize autofctional texts, but none of which is unique or defning: a combination of real and invented elements; onomastic correspondence between author and character or narrator; and stylistic and linguistic experimentation.
